Blessed Thanksgiving!

I am attempting to put a photo of my front yard earlier today on this post so you can see I am in a very beautiful place. It is sunny, and several inches of snow fell overnight. Really nice for Thanksgiving Day.

I think the earliest I remember it snowing was one year when it snowed on October 2. That was unusually early. This year we have already have several inches that came and melted as is normal for November. However, it is not very often that we have several inches on the ground for Thanksgiving. It is nice. I said on my FB post this morning that I love Central New York, and I truly do. I know many would prefer the constant warm climate of a southern state, but I have always loved it when it gets cold, snowy and even enjoy the shorter day-light of the days.

Now having said that, I really do get tired of the wet snow and the boots and the gloves and the lack of sun as the year progresses. I am done with it around mid-February, but it usually isn't done with us until late March or by mid-April. However, for the most part I love the weather where I am appointed to live.

Yes, I am here on assignment and by appointment. It is not where I was raised and not where I thought in my youth that I would live my life. However, The Lord moved my husband, my son and myself (our small family – which would eventually increase to 4 children) into the Northeastern US in 1966 on assignment as tent-maker missionaries. We remain so. Our situation has been modified a whole lot but we continue to be servants of our Lord Jesus Christ in teaching Bible and building His Kingdom. So we love the Northeast and we love the people. It is a marvelous place to raise a family.

The Kingdom is diverse and rich in many ways. I have never found people hard, cold nor resistent to the goodness of God. There are such people everywhere, regardless of where one might live, so we do what is needful – we set the atmosphere – where-ever in the Spirit and it is amazing the sweet reception and openness folk have in their hearts to the true King and Lord.

It is only when we confuse our own doctrines, or worship preferences, that it gets difficult. But when we want to simply love and allow our Lord to love through us, it is amazing how open folk can be. The Lord came in love as a response of the Father's love. Can we have any other agenda? If He then draws them to walk with us, teaching and more information can be easily shared and is often very warmly received.

The Lord is faithful to fulfill His call on our lives and we are so thankful to still be healthy and able to do as He commissioned us so long ago. So our Thanksgiving Day is a very blessed one in Him! It is always so!

I pray you wrap in Him and allow Him to be the reason for your joy. He will not fail you – now or later. Blessed Thanksgiving All!

Before The Foundation…

cornerstone“For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” 1 Peter 20-21

After writing and assuring his readers that they are of precious value in respect to the price paid for them, Peter continues to instruct us about just who the Precious Price is. He was known before the “laying down” of the cosmos. That is the literal rendering. The term used here for “foundation” has the sense of laying down a foundation prior to building anything. It is a term trying to convey an understanding to us that is hard to grasp.

We are creatures of thinking in “beginnings” and “ends.” But when it comes to “thinking with Him,” we must lay all such aside and become willing to embrace His mind. That means that our Lord existed always and what He was to become and to do was known all about prior to anything becoming visible – whenever that was. The same understanding (and Greek word “katabole”) is found in Ephesians 1:3-4, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world,….” So in Ephesians this word and concept of existing prior to the plans for the creation were laid down is applied to you and to me. (I am reminded of the phrase in 1 John 4:17, “…because as He is, so also are we in this world.”) Our identity in Him precedes creation.

Such thinking about Him and about us, produces “knots in my brain,” as one of my teaching associates says. It lifts us up beyond the normal into the realm of the Spirit where we begin to see and treasure all that has been done for us and with us. Our linear thinking just does not work here. Instead we see the cyclical thinking of our Father. (See Isaiah 55:8-11) This is where we are drawn as we think with Him and open our spirits in His Spirit to see as He sees.

His appearing here was for us. So we who believe (action motivated by trust based in confidence) that God raised Him from the dead and now He sits in glory – so our faith and our expectation are in God and not in ourselves, our plans, our loved ones, our friends, our circumstances – none of what is here. But we have been empowered to release into what is eternal and to take all our expectation from that realm.

Lord, thank you! I have to think quietly for a while now. Bless all who read and ponder. Such is our heritage and our empowerment.

With Life!

“…knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” 1 Peter 1:18-19 NASB

Our personal perceived value is often low due to the erroneous teaching on humility. True humility is thinking of ourselves as the Lord thinks of us. It is not trying to eliminate ourselves. If the Lord had wanted to eliminate us and simply live in our bodies, He would not have needed us at all. His desire is that we will receive the precious price paid and begin to live as one deeply and highly valued.

When we begin to understand this and begin to live in this light, our entire life-scape begins to change and we begin to be empowered to live in the trust/faith that is given in His redemption. (Romans 12:3) Since “…seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”  (2 Peter 1:3) We would do well to open our minds and hearts to receive this calling and allow His thoughts to take first place in our mind and life.

Our own thoughts about ourselves are often warped by what we have experienced in relationship with others, or what we have spent time watching, listening to and reading. Our world is not conducive to holy and right thoughts. Distractions come from every direction. But, when we choose to receive, truly receive in our deepest levels of being, the truth of His love that is evident in His payment, then we begin to be able to really hear and “see” His Word and the movement of His Spirit in that Word, through that Word, and out of that Word! His thoughts, provisions and love for us begin to take a proper place and we begin to be able to stand in Him.

There are two “But…He said’s” that come to us when we begin to ponder these thoughts. The first is from John the Baptist, when he said in John 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John was talking about his ministry, not his person. We cannot decrease our persons – just doesn’t happen regardless of how hard we try. Our person must begin to shine in Him and become more than we ever thought. This is what pleases Him and shows off our worth – Us with and in Him, the hope (expectation) of glory! Not just Him, but the two of us!

The other “but” comes from Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 15:31 where he writes, “I die daily.” Once again the context of the statement is of ultimate importance. He is talking about facing physical death every day. He is not talking about dying inwardly, nor about sin at all.

In each case the context of the text is completely overlooked and the text has been made to apply to something that is untrue. So as we begin to ponder just what His payment of life – eternal blood, says about our value in His heart, may that begin to dominate our thoughts about ourselves. Lots of stuff begins to change right about now!

Father Son1

“If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but withprecious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. 1 Peter 1:17-19 NASB

I promised yesterday to spend some time working with “the value of the price paid.” In my home I have an antique oak desk. Years ago I was gifted with a choice of a new desk costing a certain amount or an antique one. Well, I enjoy antiques as my home reflects, but it was not that enjoyment that drove me to purchase the antique oak one I found. I knew when the new desk would be placed in my home, it would have immediately lost most of its value – simply because it was a new one. The antique, however, would not loose its value but rather over the years it would increase in value. So I was concerned to make the purchase price a good investment, since it was generous.

We value items according to their cost or according to our investment in them. So we can understand a bit of the thinking of our Father. He paid a price that in His mind was equivalent to the value. I tease in my classes that “He overpaid for each one of us,” but really He didn’t. He knew our value to Him – that was what drove Him. That abundant love and overflow that He had invested in humanity – we were worth the treasure of heaven – Jesus Christ our Lord – so the Father could have fellowship in us and with us. Our value was not only stated by that action, but stated eternally.

So when we, as His children, begin to accept His value of our lives – in and over all the journeys, then the value is treasured and the fellowship and empowerment is deep. If, however, we choose not to receive our heritage and live our lives as if we were worth only what we can achieve – then we have discounted His love and His payment price. We have effectively said He did not know what He was doing, because we do not want to be as He is. (1 John 4:17)

So living in Him releases the value of our heritage for all to see. It is a spiritual worth that invades every fiber of our being to bring all that is His to us.

Lord, we open, we receive the value you set on us. We choose to exchange our thoughts of our own worth from our heritage and our accomplishments (or lack thereof), and simply be in You – all the value you have within and upon us as those who are Yours. We call you “Father!” Awesome!

Living in Holy Fear

Image

“If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but withprecious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
1 Peter 1:17-19 NASB

In our understanding of the love and grace of the Lord, this first verse is a bit difficult on us. We do call our God, Father, recognizing that He is our source in all things, life, food, physical life, spiritual life, etc…. He clearly defines Himself throughout the entire Bible as the one who is impartial in every way. He is not granting favor to anyone on the basis of their humanity at all, but totally on the basis of the finished work of Christ (I consider the work of Christ finished after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost – not before).

So what is this encouragement addressing? We are told to conduct ourselves “in fear during our time on earth…”. The word used here for fear is “phobos” which means “to be put to flight, panic flight, fear, the causing of fear, terror, etc…”. Why does the Holy Spirit tell us to behave ourselves in “fear” or “terror?” I believe the answer is in the rest of the verse, “knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with the percious blood,as of a lamb unblemished andspotless, the blood of Christ.”

There was a very high price paid for us. The treasure of Heaven, Christ Himself and the precious blood which had remained sinless in His time here. This was God’s only blood and man’s only spotless blood, poured out on earth like a common thing to be disgarded and buried under soil. Because of this high price that we cost, for us to live in such a way that says that blood is of no value is an offense in the God-Head. It is to count our value is nothing.

Now our Lord has forgiven us, and placed in us the Holy Spirit. We are heaven bound. However, I suspect that when the blood is devalued in our earthly minds and then we live it out – counting it worthless, then we place ourselves in danger of not being fully able to comprehend spiritual realms available to every believer. The thinking then can become exceedingly warped, unable to live the holy life given as a gift, we simply live in shadows of our true identity. The life then becomes one of strife and weakness instead of peace and strength.

Now that is my opinion of what happens. You can take it and work with it, or simply disgard it. But whatever we do, let us not disregard the price paid. That is for the next post.

Preparing Minds

DSCF0087

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am Holy.'” 1 Peter 1: 13-16

The Holy Spirit’s instruction and admonition to all is to prepare our minds for action. I know there is more in this scripture, but let’s “camp” here for a moment or two. My thoughts go to those of us who are in the autum years of our life here on planet earth. It is so easy at any age, and particularly as we age, to allow the mind to be entertained but not engaged. It is so easy to slip into our culture of media entertainment instead of meaningful reading or writing or study of some sort.

Do not misunderstand, I believe in media and I use media in every way possible. It can be used to enrich or to engage and make us think. I read on my Kindle reader on my iPad most of the time I read. So I am not speaking here of trying to go backward “to a simpler time,” which really is a figment of someone’s imagination, but with an attitude of alert awareness that takes effort and training to accomplish.

As we age, this gets harder to do and is less prominent than in our earlier, obvious learning years. But Peter (and the Holy Spirit) specifies no age on this – just an instruction to all of us. Our minds must be prepared for action in the Holy Spirit.

How is that done? Well, the Lord may speak a word to you about it (probably about now) that has to do with how He in you would like to accomplish this. He is able and willing to do that for each one of us. For me, it is reading His word in massive amounts and listening then moving into dialogue for my day and for the season. For others it will be different, considering my assignment as a teacher of the Word. However we do it, Scripture, dialogue with the Lord, tongues, moving in the flow of the Spirit – all of the above. Let’s renew that “computer” in our head with and in the Word, then stay alert in our thinking to receive and flow in the remainder of the section of Scripture.

We can dwell in “autumn” while we think like “spring.” A challenge, indeed – but in Him very do-able.

We Are Surrounded!

“As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy spirit sent from heaven–things into which angels longed to look.”

1 Peter 1:10-12 NASB

This is an awesome concept! The prophets of long ago, (Old Testament), prophesied of the grace we are now enjoying in our Lord Jesus, and they sought diligently to know timing. They wanted to know when the Christ would come, suffer and then bring the glories we enjoy. Our present “end-time” folk remind me of them. I think it is good, always, to search His Word. We discover what we have missed, and then the Spirit of the Lord begins to unveil Scripture to us in ways that we have not understood. I think it interesting that then and now, it was timing that they wanted to know. There is much to know, but I am not certain timing is one of them. What the prophets of old were shown is that they were not prophesing for themselves, but for generations that would follow. Us.

I am reminded of this passage in Hebrews 11. After sharing the “Faith’s Hall of Fame” with us, the author then says this:

“And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect. Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith….” Hebrews 11:39-12:2b NASB

Heaven is very concerned with us. This cloud of witnesses (what a marvelous way to describe a group of spirits) does not just look down and observe, they are surrounding us, right now. That causes my spirit to jump inside. The old prophets were told that they were serving a people yet to be, and now we know that those who choose Christ are that group of people. So we do not walk alone. The Trinity embraces us and the cloud surrounds us. That is awesome! Thank you, Lord Jesus!

We are one with them, through Jesus. He lives in our bodies in the Spirit and we live in His Spirit in His body at the right hand of the Majesty on High. We co-dwell with our Lord just like we are co-inheritors. So the purpose of the prophecies of old was for you and for me. Be blessed today!

“For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4 NASB

Precious, Valued, Loved, Enriched!

Image

The season is changing here in Central New York, but some plants are still blooming and bringing great joy. This one is a special gift. I am so blessed by it – have been all summer. If you look closely you can see some tree leaves that have fallen into its leaves. Still so lovely.

“And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For this is contained in Scripture: ‘Behold I lay in Zion a Choice Stone, a precious corner stone, and He who believes in Him will not be disappointed.’ This precious value, then , is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve,, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone,’ ‘A Stone of stumbline and a Rock of offense’; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. But you ar a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a Holy Nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:4-10

I really had not planned to put so many verses in that quote, but there was no way to break it up without doing an injustice to its thought patterning. It says so much. Verses 4-5 were covered in a previous post, but had to be included for context sake.

I AM A PRECIOUS, VALUED, PROVIDED FOR PERSON IN THE SIGHT OF MY FATHER! There is no other way to say this scripture in a few words. Each one of us who have answered His call in our hearts, are this valued, precious and provided for in all ways. Jesus Christ, Son and Treasure of the Living God, came voluntarily, and under the covenant of the Father, in the power of the Holy Spirit to live, work, and die as a human infused with God. So all of us could become empowered by that same Holy Spirit to live as He did in this world and to inherit with Him all that is God’s. THERE IS NO WAY TO ADEQUATELY EXPRESS YOUR VALUE! The price paid for us was so much more than any treasure we can comprehend and was done in such overwhelming love, that we will do well, to begin to receive it as truth.

Living in that light, we truly become light and begin to enter into the relationship so longed for in our Father’s heart. Humility, true humility, is accepting what He has done for us as truth. Continuing to dwell in our “unworthy” state is a denial of His work. May we begin to accept and believe what is written.

We are to be those who proclaim His excellencies in every aspect of our lives. Our speech, our life-style, our thoughts – all to be renewed by this word in order to allow the transformation of our lives by this light into this light.

No guilt – only invitation and empowerment in being. Yes, Lord, we choose to come, be and receive!

The House of His Dreams

Image  “And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:4-5 NASB

(The photo attached is a very special fall gift for our front steps from one of our marvelous neighbors. We are so blessed to be so included in a neighborhood. Who would have thought – a busy street in a Central New York city. God is awesome!)

This passage will change our lives if we will really mediate on it and allow it to sink into our being. It is about us. God’s choosing and God’s loving us. We come to Him and find that He has been waiting all along to receive, to bless and to allow us to experience His heart. Here He calls us “living stones.” You see, God has been building a house all along. We find illusions to it all through the Old Covenant. Let me quote a book I am reading.

“The Bible’s story begins by telling us about the world where the story takes place. In the Bible, the world is the real world that we live in, the world that God created. But the Bible describes the world in a particular way. In some places, the Bible describes it as a house. Talking to Job from the whirlwind, Yahweh asks: ‘Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth! Tell me, if you know understanding, Who set its measurements, since you know? Or who stretched the line on it? On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone, When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy? [Job 33:4-7]  Earth and especially mountains, are set on ‘foundations’ (Deuteronomy 32:32; 2 Samuel 22:8, 16; Psalm 104:5) just like the foundations that hold up a house. Blue sky is stretched out above like a ‘tent curtain’ (Isaiah 40:22). Pillars support the earth (Job 9:6) and heaven (Job 26:11). When God first appears in the Bible, He is building a house.” A House For My Nameby Peter J. Leithart, pp. 43-44

In the New Covenant in Ephesians and Hebrews, statements made are also about His house. Then there are the ones in 1 Corinthians 3 & 6 about us being  the temple of the Holy Spirit. Now here in 1 Peter – more of the same.

You, my precious believing friend, are the house of His dreams. He is not after a house of brick and mortar, but the heart and spirit of the one He created to “being with” – you and me. We are the “living stones” that are being built up as a “spiritual house” for this holy priesthood that offers the living sacrifice of life, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Such a high calling. Such a marvelous concept to grasp and to ponder. Such a gift of love and empowerment in becoming. Truly our God is awesome!

Time To Grow Up

“Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.” 1 Peter 2:1-3 NASB

This thought is continued from the last passage in chapter 1 where Peter begins to instruct the people to participate in their salvation. Faith is participation. Participation in the work of the Lord is our call and our “spiritual service of worship.” (Romans 12:1)  My thoughts go to John 5:19, “Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.” Jesus was to participate in what the Father was doing. So He “saw” that and went for it. It looked to all observing, that it was Jesus doing it. However, He states He was only doing what the Father was doing. So His action of faith was simply doing what the Father was already busy doing.

There are several ways to move further with this thought, but I want to continue here with the Scripture above. He is telling them to “grow up” into their salvation, but getting rid of some things that are natural to a mere human yet spiritually toxic. We are no longer merely human. We are God-infused humanity in Jesus Christ and the temple of the Holy Spirit. The Father refers to us as His sons. So in that placement, it is time that we begin to lay aside, or cease participation in some things which are not according to this new birth from the imperishable, incorruptible, eternal seed of the Word.

The first item is “malice” in this translation. This is also translated “wickedness” (“Kakia” – Greek transliteration) . If you know as a human that an action or thought or motive is “wicked,” then get rid of it. Pretty simple. The next “deceit” (“dolos” – Gk.) is something done with another motive. In other words, what you see is not what you get. The next is similar in meaning, “hypocrisy” (hupokrisis”- Gk) or literally “play acting” or being two-faced we would say. The next item is “envy” (phthonos” – Gk) or jealousy. I once tried to study “envy” but did not want to study “jealousy.” I became very frustrated – because they essentially are the same emotion. The last “slander” (“katalalia” – Gk) means to speak evil about someone.

All these items are in our own control. We can, with the power of grace, rid our thoughts and therefore our feelings of these spiritually toxic items.

As we do that, our longing (hunger etc…) grows for the genuine milk of the word. A longing that is that of a new-born. Nothing, but nothing will satisfy when that hunger sets into a new-born. They begin to fuss, yell and make a scene – because they are hungry. We are to long intensely like that for the Word.

The passage continues, “…so that by it (the Word) you may grow in respect to salvation….” The “in respect to” here is actually one word in the Greek text – “eis” – whose primary meaning is “into.” So to translate it clearly, “…so that by the Word you may grow into salvation.” Now we all know that salvation is an instant kind of thing. However, “growing up” into it is to take it seriously and begin to lay aside the spiritually toxic items in our behavior, and allow the truth of the Word through the power of the Holy Spirit to form our beings into “God-Son.”

Peter then puts an “if” on it all. “…if you have tasted the kindness (or goodness) of the Lord.” All this is dependent on your “tasting” His goodness. It is not a legal thing, but a relational thing. He is the Word, and He tastes good – much like milk to a new-born. He just tastes good and we end up wanting more.

Those who seldom read or study the Word, or study and read only what makes them feel good, have not yet seen and tasted this goodness. For His kindness simply makes us want more and we get more by and through Him in His Word. The Word is alive and breathes with the breath that I need to be “God-Son” .

Draw near and He draws near. He feeds, we eat – then we want more. May His grace abound upon us as we drink and become this salvation He has so graciously given.
